February is often known as the month of hearts and flowers—but for kinship families, love looks a little different. It’s the quiet, steady kind. The kind that shows up in courtrooms, at school meetings, and during late-night homework sessions. It’s love rooted in commitment, sacrifice, and stepping in when it matters most.
Here in Wyoming, kinship caregivers—grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and close family friends—are the backbone of stability for thousands of children. When families face crisis, kinship caregivers answer the call, often with little notice and even fewer resources. Their love keeps children connected to family, culture, and community.
The Unique Strength of Kinship Families
Kinship care isn’t always planned. Many caregivers step into their role unexpectedly, navigating new systems, financial strain, and emotional challenges while trying to keep life as normal as possible for the children in their care.
And yet, kinship families show incredible resilience.
They learn new rules, advocate fiercely, and find ways to create safe, loving homes—often while balancing work, health concerns, and fixed incomes. Their dedication deserves recognition not just in February, but all year long.
How a Kinship Navigator Can Help
That’s where Kinship Navigator programs come in. Our role is to walk alongside caregivers, helping them understand their options and connect with resources such as:
- Financial and legal guidance
- Help navigating benefits and assistance programs
- Referrals to counseling, childcare, and support services
- Connections to local and statewide kinship support networks
No one should have to figure this out alone—and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Love Is Asking for Support
This month, as we celebrate love in all its forms, we want kinship caregivers to know this: you matter, and your well-being matters too. Caring for yourself is part of caring for the children who depend on you.
If you’re a kinship caregiver in Wyoming—or know someone who is—reach out to your local Kinship Navigator. Whether you have a specific question or just don’t know where to start, we’re here to help.
Thank You for Showing Up
To every kinship caregiver: thank you for the love you give, the stability you provide, and the future you help protect. Your commitment changes lives, and we are honored to support you on this journey.
