Intergenerational Connectedness

Published on July 2, 2025

After spending an amazing few days at The Generations United Intergenerational Conference we wanted to take a second and highlight the amazing work being done. There are so many amazing programs working to build intergenerational connections. What if instead of staying in our own little bubble, we broadened our horizons and connected with those younger and older than us? Could we learn to support one another the way we were intended to? Information from the University of Florida( https://online.aging.ufl.edu/2024/09/09/opportunities-for-connection-5-benefits-of-intergenerational-relationships/) highlights 5 major benefits of intergenerational relationships:

  1. Establishing Emotional Support
  2. Gaining Practical Knowledge
  3. Building Community Ties
  4. Experiencing Personal Growth
  5. Preserving Family Traditions

There are some amazing intergenerational leaders who have created neighborhoods and communities. The Treehouse Foundation has a framework for an intentional, affordable-housing neighborhood designed to provide healing and permanency for kids have experienced foster care. It also provides vital aging for older people and support for youth who have aged out of foster care. Here is a video that explains more about this concept,

While we all may not have the means to join our own intergenerational community, we urge you to start making those connections in your own life. This can be by intentionally spending time with your elderly neighbor every week, creating activities for your children to do with older adults, or simply by taking the time to listen to someone else’s story. Together support is possible and we all have something vital to bring to the table.
