Practicing Gratitude In Times Of Hardship

Published on November 12, 2025

In uncertain times where so many are struggling around us, it can be hard to find things to be thankful for. Some people don’t know where their next meal is coming from or where they will find the money to pay their electricity bill. This is heavy for those experiencing it and those witnessing it. We want you to know you are not alone. Here are some ideas to practice gratitude in the midst of hardship that can be helpful for you as well as your kinship children.

  1. Daily Gratitude Journal- As a family take 10 minutes each night to write or draw something you are thankful for during this day. This can be something as small as the sunshine on your face. This daily practice gets you in the mindset of gratitude and helps encourage this mindfulness for your children.
  2. Dice Gratitude Game- Take turns rolling a dice and each number correlates to a question. This gets the family engaged and talking to one another.
  3. What person helped you the most this year
  4. What is something you are most grateful for today.
  5. What thing/ object are you most grateful for today
  6. What special memory are you grateful for
  7. Best memory this year
  8. Name anything you are grateful for
  9. Meditation- Take time each day to breathe and focus on mindfully connecting with your body. Stress impacts our physical well being too.
  10. Thankful Turkey craft/ game- Get colorful paper and cut out feathers. Every night let your kids add a feather to the turkey. This keeps your little ones busy and engaged.

We want you to know you are not alone. Times are hard and finding ways to be thankful is not easy. We want to acknowledge the hardship and give you some fun ways to work through it. As always, if you are looking for resources contact your kinship navigator or dial 2-1-1 to get connected.
